澄心銘係憨山大師五十三歲那年,弟子丁右武,生性急烈,為人慷慨,但只知敬僧,不知有佛法。他將要回家去時,憨山大師送他到船,並重下鉗錘,這時丁右武幡然大悟。憨山大師替他取了一個號叫「覺非居士」,又作了一篇《澄心銘》警策他,足見憨山大師之超高智慧與慈悲,能當機因才施教,喚醒徒弟迷中頓悟,更見師徒情深之流露,多麼感動人的一幕。茲將其全文恭錄於下:
憨山大師澄心銘:(中英文)
真性湛淵,如澄止水;憎愛擊之,煩惱浪起。
起之不休,自性渾濁;煩惱無明,愈增不覺。
以我取彼,如泥入水;以彼動我,如膏益火。
彼亂我真,亂實我生;我若不生,劫燒成冰。
是故至人,先空我相;我相若空,彼從何障。
忘我之功,在乎堅忍;習氣纔發,忽然猛省。
省處即覺,一念回光;埽蹤絕迹,當下清涼。
清涼寂靜,挺然獨立;恬澹怡神,物無與敵。
TRUE NATURE IS MOST PROFOUND
LIKE STILL AND LIMPID WATER.
IF IT IS STIRRED BY LOVE AND HATE,
PASSIONS WILL ARISE IN WAVES.
THE CONTINUANCE OF WHICH
MAKES THE SELF-NATURE TURBID;
THE TROUBLES OF IGNORANCE
ALL UNNOTICED WILL INCREASE.
WHEN SELFNESS CLINGS TO OTHERNESS,
IT IS LIKE THROWING MUD IN WATER.
IF OTHERNESS STIRS SELFNESS,
IT IS LIKE POURING OIL ON FIRE.
WHEN TRUE SELF IS SO DISTURBED,
SUCH STIRRING FROM AN EGO COMES.
IF EGO CEASES TO ARISE,
EVEN BURNING KALPA'S ICY.
THEREFORE, A WISE MAN ALWAYS
RELINQUISHES HIS EGO.
IF THERE BE NO EGO
ALL OBSTRUCTIONS VANISH.
RELINQUISHMENT OF EGO
DEPENDS ON LONG ENDURANCE.
WHEN YOUR OLD HABITS RETURN,
BE AT ONCE ON THE ALERT:
ALERTNESS TO AWARENESS LEADS
WHICH IN A FLASH, ON ITSELF SHINES BACK
AND SWEEPS AWAY ALL TRACES OF THEM.
AT ONCE YOU WILL BE CLEAR, AT EASE
IN THIS PURE AND SERENE STILLNESS.
ALONE AND SOVEREIGN YOU WILL
ENJOY MOST PERFECT HARMONY
WHICH NO EXTERNALS CAN EQUATE.

THE KALPA OR AEON OF DESTRUCTION BY FIRE WHICH WILL TURN ICY AND WILL NOT BURN YOU. )
有云:「不怕念起,只怕覺遲。」覺者,醒覺也,省悟也,以佛心、良心作主宰,破我執、法執,讓人心死也。如果不覺,人心作主,識神當家,良心不見了,於是執著於善惡、你我分別、對待、好壞、自私、名利恩怨,三心四相不能除,不得自在也。蓋人心猶如危險性的野獸,叫做心猿意馬,人若不能栓心猿鎖意馬,它將讓您到處闖禍造業而不能自主,終陷輪迴不已,所謂"十法界一念心。"不可不慎也。吾人更當感恩憨山大師用心良苦,寫下「澄心銘」以警世人。大學有云:「慎心物於隱微,遏意惡於動機。」當以此自惕自勵。
